University Hospitals Case Medical Center Receives Patient Safety Award

Dr. Robert Wachter, professor and associate chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, presented the OPSI Best Practice Award to Heidi DelVecchio, RN, BSN, senior Quality improvement nurse, Quality Institute, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, during the Quality Luncheon as part of the Ohio Hospital Association’s Annual Meeting at the Hilton Columbus at Easton.

A multidisciplinary team from the Department of Medicine and the Quality Center developed the Resident EQUIPS (Externship in QUality in Patient Safety) program to equip medical residents with improved experience and skills in quality and safety initiatives.

Ohio Hospitals Cut Infections in Half

By working together, 53 Ohio hospitals have drastically reduced central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in intensive care units by 48 percent in just six months, saving lives and health care costs.

Hospitals Saving Lives, Preventing Harm from Blood Thinners

The Ohio Patient Safety Institute (OPSI) and VHA, Inc. yesterday kicked off a collaborative project with 46 hospitals and health systems across Ohio to reduce life-threatening complications associated with anticoagulants – blood thinners – which many patients take to prevent blood clots following a stroke, heart attack or vascular surgery.
